About Us
h+n farmhouse began almost by accident in November of 2018.
When our dog needed an expensive surgery, I started to think of what I could do to bring in additional income to pay for the vet bills. I had always loved the idea of creating signs, and asked my husband who has been in the (large scale) sign business for 20+ years if he could teach me how to make a farmhouse-style sign. I thought I could make some to sell to family and friends over the holidays.
When I began, I could barely paint, had no idea how to cut, use a drill or even a staple gun. My husband helped... a lot. A few weeks into creating some pieces, a friend posted that she was looking for "makers" for a holiday market she was putting on. Without really thinking, I shared a picture of what I was doing, and before I knew it, I was signed up for the market, with hardly anything made and still not much of a clue of what I was doing.
Very quickly I got together some pieces and samples to bring with me - and I was quickly overwhelmed at the response. What started as making signs for family and friends was being overtaken by creating custom pieces for people I didn't know! The business kept growing and growing, and after a while, I decided to put all of my energy and focus into this business, and left my job as an occasional teacher with the school board and went all in.
I am proud at how far I have come, and what I have learned throughout the years. It brings me joy to create a piece that will last for years to come in someone's home. Every piece is carefully made from scratch, and stained and painted. (Almost entirely done by me! My husband still likes to help with cutting - and he says my hands are too precious to risk losing a finger, lol)
I am so grateful for the support I have had, and continue to receive. Thank you for following along and for supporting a small business dream!
xo, Britton
(PS - Wondering where the name came from? My two beautiful children are named Harper + Nixon, hence h+n)
